 Changhma Times News | Lunglei | August 27, 2025

In a unique and inspiring initiative, the Lunglei Deputy Commissioner’s Office organized the special program “Ni Khat Atan Bawrhsap – Be Deputy Commissioner for a Day” under the District-Level Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The program aimed to raise awareness against substance abuse while empowering young minds with leadership experience.

Guided by the theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All,” the initiative gave six bright students from Lunglei the rare opportunity to step into the shoes of the Deputy Commissioner and experience the responsibilities of governance.

The chosen students were:

Joseph R. Vanlalpeka (Govt. High School, Lunglei)

C. Lalngaihzuali (Sacred Heart HSS)

R. Lalhmingmuanpuia (Sacred Heart HSS)

Judy C. Lalenkawli (Baptist HSS)

K. Zomuanpuia (Baptist HSS)

Gracy Lalchhanchhuahi (Govt. HSS, Lunglei)

From chairing the DC office at 9 AM, to reviewing the work of 12 major departments including Municipal Council, Education, Health, PWD, PHE, P&E, Transport, Revenue, Police, and others, the young “Deputy Commissioners” were given a real taste of administration. They also inspected ongoing projects such as the Multi-Level Car Parking at DCSO Office compound and the Health ATM at Civil Hospital Lunglei.

Adding to the day’s highlights, the students launched the “Book Nest Initiative,” an effort to promote a culture of reading among young learners.

At the end of the program, the student DCs shared their reflections, calling the experience “eye-opening, educational, and highly motivating.” They expressed gratitude to DC Pi Navneet Mann, who later awarded them certificates and assured that the initiative will be extended to sub-divisions and block levels, giving more students across Lunglei District the chance to participate.

This initiative not only instilled confidence and leadership among students but also sent a strong message about the fight against substance abuse and the importance of responsible citizenship.

With programs like these, Lunglei is paving the way for nurturing responsible, aware, and visionary leaders of tomorrow.
