Historic Milestone for Mizoram: Sairang–Bairabi Railway Line to be Inaugurated on September 13

Aizawl, August 2025:

A new chapter in Mizoram’s history is set to unfold as the long-awaited Sairang–Bairabi Railway Line will be officially inaugurated on September 13 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The landmark project, undertaken by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), is being hailed as a game-changer that will bring unprecedented connectivity, economic growth, and opportunities to the state.

Meeting with Railway Board

In preparation for the grand inauguration, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma met with Railway Board Chairman & CEO, Pu Satish Kumar at his residence in Aizawl. The discussions focused on various challenges, including the need for proper side drains along the National Highway to prevent flooding, and the settlement of pending railway compensation issues. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of addressing these concerns before the railway becomes fully operational.

Voices from the People

The people of Aizawl and surrounding areas have welcomed the development with overwhelming joy. Residents believe the railway will not only make travel and transport easier but also open doors for trade, tourism, and socio-economic progress.

Local community leaders echoed these sentiments:

  • Pu Vanlalmuana, President of Sairang YMA, described the project as a “new dawn for Mizoram” and a historic milestone.

  • Pu B. Lalrinthanga, Adviser of Sairang YMA and Area MUP President, expressed confidence that the railway will significantly contribute to the state’s growth and modernization.

Akashvani reports further revealed that many families in Sairang have already begun preparations near the upcoming station area, with small vendors anticipating better business once train services commence.

Engineering Marvel

The 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang New Line stands as a testament to engineering excellence, featuring:

  • 48 tunnels

  • 55 major bridges

  • 87 minor bridges

  • 5 Road Over Bridges (ROBs)

  • 6 Road Under Bridges (RUBs)

Divided into four sections—Bairabi–Hortoki (16.72 km), Hortoki–Kawnpui (9.71 km), Kawnpui–Mualkhang (12.11 km), and Mualkhang–Sairang (12.84 km)—the line will seamlessly link Mizoram with India’s vast railway network.

Strategic Importance

The project is part of India’s Act East Policy, designed to strengthen connectivity in the Northeast and foster cross-border trade. With this inauguration, Mizoram will join Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh as one of the four Northeastern states whose capital city will be directly connected to the national railway grid.

A New Era Begins

As the people of Mizoram eagerly await the inaugural train whistle, hopes are high that the Sairang–Bairabi railway will transform lives, create opportunities, and pave the way for greater integration with the rest of the country.
