Zangura-Led Executive Council Takes Charge in Lai Autonomous District Council

A fresh political chapter has begun in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) as Chief Executive Member (CEM) N. Zangura and his newly appointed team of nine Executive Members (EMs) formally assumed office on Tuesday. The oath of office was administered by David Lalrinawma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai District, in a solemn ceremony that marked the official start of the new administration.

The formation of the new Executive Committee followed the approval of Governor Gen. V.K. Singh, who gave his assent on Monday based on the advice of CEM Zangura. On the same day, portfolios were allocated to the CEM and his colleagues, paving the way for the council to begin its governance responsibilities without delay.

Strategic Appointments to Strengthen Leadership

In a move seen as consolidating the new regime, the Governor also cleared the appointments of senior BJP leaders:

  • B.N. Thangpuia as Adviser to the CEM,

  • Tuturu Singh as Deputy Chief Whip, and

  • C. Lalmuanthanga, former CEM, as Vice Chairman of the Planning & Development Committee.

These appointments not only reinforce the leadership team but also signal a broader political alignment under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) banner.

Securing the Mandate

The new council assumes charge following CEM Zangura’s successful floor test last Friday, where he commanded the support of 14 members, defeating the five-member bloc of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). Earlier that day, VL Hmuaka was chosen unopposed as Chairman of the Council, presiding over the session that confirmed Zangura’s majority.

The UDA currently enjoys a stronghold with 15 elected members—11 from the Mizo National Front (MNF) and three from the BJP. Their strength was further bolstered when the lone Congress MDC extended outside support, while ZPM member Tuturu Singh officially switched allegiance to the BJP on August 19.

A New Beginning for the Lai Council

With the oath-taking complete, the Zangura-led team has now embarked on its official term, promising political stability and fresh leadership in the Lai region. The reconstitution of the council marks a decisive moment, cementing the UDA’s grip on power and setting the stage for the administration’s future policies and developmental initiatives.

As the Lai Autonomous District Council steps into this new era, the people of Lawngtlai and beyond now look ahead with expectations of governance that will bring progress, inclusivity, and growth to the region.
